The music title pages of the 1920s are far more than mere packaging for musical content (pop songs) - they reflect social change, the artistic zeitgeist and the spirit of optimism of the Weimar Republic.
Between opulent Art Deco motifs, stylized figures and geometric shapes, these often colourful illustrations tell stories of jazz, dance, new beginnings, everyday life and an irrepressible zest for life.
Our new exhibition puts the spotlight on this often overlooked art form. It not only documents the close connection between music and graphic design, but also provides a fascinating insight into the attitude to life of a decade of cultural upheaval.
