“Light - 8 min 20 sec“
As colored light can be described the art of Eckhard Meier-Wölfle. The artist from Nierstein has been showing his works mainly in the Southwestern German region for over 40 years. The works presented in the Burggrafiat in Alzey were mainly created on canvas.
The horizontal works convey an idea of landscape – here one can recognize echoes of our Rheinhessen hilly country. The works in portrait format remind us of the grandeur of cathedrals and evoke an association with church windows. Windows are also a general theme.
In the works, the staging of the phenomenon of light can be found again and again. Light lets color exist, light lets life exist – this is the artist's credo. The exhibition shows works in large and small formats in several rooms. One room is dedicated to a small retrospective of over 40 years of art. However, it all begins with a photo installation of sunrises. This also explains the title of the exhibition: “Light – 8 min 20 sec.” The sun sends its light to our Earth – it takes an average of 8 minutes and 20 seconds to reach us.
Meier-Wölfle’s transparent painting style lets light shine through the color. On closer inspection, the painting process becomes apparent: numerous layers of paint are applied and removed. Meier-Wölfle describes his painting style as both painterly and constructive.
The objects are made from Swiss pine wood in combination with “antique glass,” a mouth-blown flat glass. The Swiss pine grows only in high mountain regions and was referred to by the Celts as the “tree of light.”
Works by Eckhard Meier-Wölfle radiate a meditative joy.
On Sunday, April 19, and Sunday, May 10, guided tours with the artist will take place at 4 p.m.
