Philipp Weber: Power to the popel

Admit it, you just read “Power to the People” and internally hummed the wonderful song by John Lennon. But this title is not a typo, as Philipp Weber's cabaret piece revolves around the little “Popel,” which according to the Duden describes a “nondescript and miserable little person.” It is actually the role of democracy to transform the scattered tiny beings into a self-disciplined people, the sovereign sovereign. But how quickly does the Popel also become the Pöbel? According to unofficial polls from the federal government, 75 percent of Germans believe that three-quarters of Germans are complete idiots. So who actually holds the power here? The people, the rabble, or the little ones?

In times when representatives and manipulators of the people endlessly lament the crisis of civil society, the cabaret artist exercises the most valuable democratic virtue with his audience on an exciting expedition through the flora and fauna of the state: humor.
