The Irishwoman Gráinne Ní Mháille, also known by the English name Grace O’Malley, was part of the free Gaelic clan society that was ultimately destroyed by the English in the 16th century.
Gráinne broke the boundaries for women of her time: She lived as a pirate on the Irish west coast, ruled as a woman over her own territory as well as a fleet, and was in a constant cycle of resistance, submission, and cooperation with the English conquerors.
At the end of her life, Gráinne Ní Mháille even met the roughly similarly aged English Queen Elizabeth I in an audience; there she was able to secure the release of her son and a letter of marque for her privateering activities.
Even in her time, Gráinne had become a living legend, and the memory of her continued to exist in numerous myths. Centuries after her death, Gráinne Ní Mháille eventually became a national figure of identification and a feminist icon.
The presentation vividly illustrates Gráinne Ní Mháille's adventurous life and the era of the complete military conquest of Ireland with plenty of visual material. Queen, subject, rebel, realist, feminist...: The various interpretations of her person are presented, and a as realistic as possible, source-oriented picture of the historical figure Gráinne Ní Mháille is shown.
The presentation consists of two parts, each lasting about 50 minutes.
