Walkable, experienced former sandstone quarry

Partial action field 4.2 Landscape management

The Association of Friends of Nature Flonheim and Umgebung eV has acquired a former sandstone quarry in Flonheim with the aim of preserving it and bringing it to life. The history of the quarry from the Romans to the present day, the geology and nature in and around the quarry are to be shown on the spot. In combination with various hands-on offers, the "quarry" experience will be interesting for both visitors and locals.

Various elements are conceivable here: uniform information stations with text suitable for children, Bohlwege (also for visitor guidance), construction of a traditional Steinhauerhütte for use in workshops or other activities, replica of the former working world, as well as various stations in the quarry, which contain a section from a particular epoch of the Show quarry.

In cooperation with the local museum "Infothek Flonheim", the planned Roman route Rheinhessen (info point "former Roman quarries Flonheim"),
the Kliff Eckelsheim and the new Hiwweltour Aulheimer Tal
can offer a total tourist experience here,
This contributes to the length of stay in the
Increase the tourism region Rheinhessen Switzerland.

Contents and goals:

  • Barrier-free development of part of the quarry
  • Preservation of the quarry in its naturalness
  • Information about history, geology and nature, combined with hands-on offers
