The American artist and adopted Londoner Whistler was a pivotal figure in the 19th century and revolutionized graphic arts into modernity. The exhibition presents etchings and lithographs he created in London and Venice, as well as works from people in his personal and professional circle. Selected graphics by his contemporaries serve to provide an art historical context, and Japanese woodcuts that influenced Whistler's work flank some of his pieces.
The Japanese artist Masuyama was invited to follow in Whistler's footsteps in London and Venice. There, he sought out the exact locations from which Whistler created his graphics in order to take photographs from the same perspective, with which he ultimately created montages that overlay historical and contemporary city views. Masuyama's overarching theme "Time, Space, Change" is also impressively conveyed through a selection of large-scale works in the basement.
