The key in the grave – gender roles in the early Middle Ages
The discovery of an undisturbed Frankish warrior's grave from the 7th century in Ingelheim's Rotweinstraße in the summer of 2023 caused quite a stir in Ingelheim. The grave goods in particular provide information about everyday life in the early Middle Ages and allow conclusions to be drawn about gender roles. We are all too quick to assume that the tasks and social functions of men and women were clearly delineated. The grave goods tell a different story. They reveal female authority and, in some cases, make it impossible to determine the gender of the buried individual. The lecture confronts our current, often clichéd ideas about gender-specific roles with the latest research on early medieval burials in southwestern Germany. After the event, Ingelheim's equal opportunities officer Regina Barroso da Silva will invite participants to enjoy a small snack.
Cooperation on the occasion of International Women's Day with the Office for Diversity and Equal Opportunities and the equal opportunities officer of the city of Ingelheim am Rhein.
