Laubenheimer Johannisberg

Laubenheimer Johannisberg

Saint John and the vineyards by the river Rhein

Isn't the village of Johannisberg in Rheingau? Yes. But it was a Mainz archbishop who settled a community of monks there around 1100 and dedicated the basilica to St. John the Baptist. The name of the single vineyard in Mainz-Laubenheim refers to the former property of the Johanniskloster. The location is magnificent, above the district, with a breathtaking view over the river and Ried in Hessen. The "3-Lagen-Wanderung" of the Mainz winegrowers leads through the Laubenheim vineyards. A wide variety of grape varieties grow on loess and limestone loam.

Hechtsheimer Kirchenstück

Hechtsheimer Kirchenstück (Church Piece of Hechtsheim)

The only one - predestined for Silvaner and Riesling

The only vineyard in Hechtsheim, "Kirchenstück", is a gem: surrounded by the houses of the Mainz district, with a wide view of the hills in Rheinhessen, the river Rhein, Mainz Cathedral and Taunus. Silvaner and Riesling vines grow here on loess soil. In recent years, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and some red wine varieties have been added. The name of the vineyard, which was first mentioned in a document over 800 years ago, goes back to an old church estate. The wine festival in the middle of the single vineyard site is well worth experiencing: on a 500-metre-long course, the Hechtsheim winegrowers invite visitors to taste and enjoy the wines. The wine festival even was awarded with the "Rheinhessen AUSGEZEICHNET" seal of quality. By the way, the Mainz tram takes visitors directly from Mainz city center to the vineyard.
