The Eiermarkt forms the heart of the old town (the medieval new town). It is the most beautiful historical building ensemble in the city. The square served as a marketplace for many centuries. It is lined with half-timbered houses from the Baroque period and the Nikolaus Church (13th century). In the middle of the square is a sculpture of the master butcher Michel Mort, who saved freedom and life in the battle of Sprendlingen in 1279 against the troops of the Archbishop of Mainz. The sculpture by Stanislaus Cauer from the end of the 19th century is one of many artworks by the Cauer sculptor family, which can be found in squares and in the museum. In December, a picturesque Advent market takes place here.
