The wine market in Germany shows in 2018 a heterogeneous appearance between volume and value development. The per capita consumption of 20.5 liters is below the value of the previous year (20.9 liters). The champagne consumption is 3.3 liters (previous year 3.5 liters), so that the total per capita consumption for wine and sparkling wine in the amount of 23.8 liters results - this corresponds to a total of about 20 million hl.

On behalf of the German Wine Institute for Private Households, the market researchers at GfK (Gesellschaft für Konsumforschung) have determined that the total market has seen expenditure on wine increase by about 1% and that the volume of wine purchased has declined by about 3%. German wines account for a stable market share of 45% in the total market and also hold their position of 51% in value.

The main foreign origins also show only minor changes: Italy remains ahead with a market share of 15% in quantity and value, followed by France with 13% in quantity and 12% in value; Spain ranks third with 9% of the market and 8% in value.
