Mainz

St. Martin's Cathedral

"This cathedral above the Rhine valley would have remained in my memory in all its power and grandeur, even if I had never seen it again," wrote the writer Anna Seghers. The immense cathedral still gives the city its face a thousand years after its construction, and it has shaped its history. Mainz, at the intersection of ancient trade routes, became the ecclesiastical center north of the Alps with the work of St. Boniface starting in 746/47; it received the title "Holy See" during the reign of Willigis (975-1011) in Mainz. Willigis,…

St. Quentin's

Mainz

St. Quintin

The parish church of St. Quintin is regarded as the oldest parish church in Mainz (it is mentioned in a document from 774). It is a late Gothic hall church that was built between 1288 and 1330. Its tower was built in 1489 and also housed a tower keeper's apartment. Today, it holds four bells (including the oldest bell in Mainz, the so-called "Lumpenglöckchen," a bee basket bell from around 1250). Saint Quintin is depicted as an oversized statue on the left side of the high altar - he is the patron saint of prisoners. On the right side…

Windeck Castle

Ingelheim

Windeck Castle

Windeck Castle in the centre of the district of Heidesheim was built by the knight Herdegen zu Winternheim in 1209 in the style of a tower castle with Gothic residential buildings. Originally, it was probably a moated castle with a moat and a curtain wall. Various owners used the castle as a residence, tannery and perforated mill, but also for religious services, before the municipality of Heidesheim am Rhein acquired it in 1993 with the aim of saving it from decay. Today, the building houses a community centre, a mayor's office and a wedding…

Hexenturm an der Fleckenmauer in Flörsheim-Dalsheim

The Witches' Tower is one of the seven mighty towers of the Fleckenmauer in Flörsheim-Dalsheim. St. Stephan Außenansicht

Mainz

St. Stephan

High above the old town of Mainz on the Stephansberg stands St. Stephen's Church – one of the city's most significant landmarks. The oldest Gothic hall church in Mainz was constructed in the late 13th and early 14th centuries and stands on the foundations of an even older church, which Archbishop Willigis had built around the year 990 as an imperial place of prayer. Willigis, also the builder of Mainz Cathedral, was buried in St. Stephen's in 1011. Heavily damaged during World War II, St. Stephen's was rebuilt in the post-war years.…

Blick auf Pauluskirche

Bad Kreuznach

Pauluskirche

600 years alone on the island St. Paul's Church Out of the pedestrian zone and into the largest church nave between Mainz and Trier, not far from the Alte Nahebrücke bridge. The space impresses with its simple size. The fact that it is largely devoid of ornamentation is in keeping with the tradition of the Reformed congregation, who have used the church as the leading denomination since 1585. Visitors are surrounded by light, peace and harmony. Only the oak pulpit attracts attention. A boy, interpreted as an angel without wings, sits on…
