Hangen-Weisheim

Evangelische Kirche Hangen-Weisheim

The tower built around the year 1000 and the old silent organ from 1784, along with the beautiful stained glass windows and a wing altar, provide a successful cross-section through different eras. During the Thirty Years' War and also in the War of the Palatine Succession, the church, regarded as the main fortification of the village, was heavily damaged and partially destroyed. In 1706, it was assigned to the Protestants, who renovated it with a flat ceiling in 1725. Even after several renovations, the overall structure of today's church…

Westhofen

Historischer Marktplatz

The local community of Westhofen was granted market rights in 1334. The marketplace is today listed as a historical monument as a whole and is one of the most beautiful in Rheinhessen due to its cohesiveness. In the past, weekly and annual markets were held in the lower part, the Gänsemarkt. The upper area served as a churchyard and burial site. The basic structure of its design was established in 1832. Architectural elements from the 16th to the early 19th century have been preserved in the surrounding buildings. Today, the marketplace…

The hipped roof building has a gable-crowned middle part and a clock-tower with a clock and weather flag, added in 1837. Below the balcony the date 1827 can be seen. This is the most important classicistic town hall in Rheinhessen. The initial use as a town hall and courthouse for Ober-Ingelheim lasted until the three old Ingelheim village…

Deutschherrenhof

In the immediate vicinity of the Deutschherrenhof on Hauptstraße (main street), a few hundred meters west of the Protestant church, is the New Leiningen Palace. The history of the Deutschherrenhof, a cultural monument, dates back to the 15th century. It originally belonged to the Lock family from Hangen-Wahlheim. At the beginning of the 16th century, the estate fell to the Teutonic Order and has been called Deutschherrenhof ever since. At the beginning of the 18th century, the old estate buildings were demolished and completely rebuilt.…

Mithraeum

Mainz

Weihealtare

The cult of Mithras was brought to Mainz by Roman legionaries in the 2nd century AD: it competed strongly with the rising Christianity, as both religions shared some similarities. The cultic meeting places, the so-called Mithraea, were situated underground and consisted of elongated vaults with a Mithras altar at one end. The vault was painted as a starry sky. The followers of the cult therefore only seemed to descend underground; they actually gathered under the canopy of heaven. The well-preserved altar is made of Odenwald marble. Its…
