The ferry connection to Mittelheim was first documented in 1348. During the time of the Kurpfalz, there was a regular ferry service conducted by the Weinheim ferry community. The whole village was involved in this. For the crossing, there were two flat ferries for transporting carts and a small boat for passengers. Daily, six men went on Fahr. At sunrise, three ferrymen crossed the Rhine and stayed in Mittelheim, ensuring that there was always a ferry ready at each bank of the Rhine. The fare for the crossing was received by the ferrymen as wages. A master sailor collected a weekly amount for the maintenance of the boats. During times of conflict, the regulated crossings were often interrupted as the boats were seized, held captive, or destroyed. The communal ferry service was dissolved by the French administration at the end of the 18th century and replaced by lease contracts.

The old Rhine bank and thus the former landing stage of the ferry are now located 170 meters inland. The harbor basin was created in 1904.
