The so-called "Mistkaut" between Nierstein and Nackenheim in the midst of the vineyards on the "Rote Hang" is directly located on the "RheinTerrassenWeg" and the "Butttenmännie-Wanderweg".
This relic of earlier times in agriculture and viticulture was previously used as a storage place for manure. Today, wine tastings and celebrations take place there.
Its name comes from a rock niche (Kaut) in the Rotliegend. This was formed by the extraction of gravel (Kummer), which was used as fertilizer. Due to its high potassium content, the application of Kummer in the fields resulted in a surprising boost in growth. Farmers would "biggel" the Kummer over the winter and then spread it in the vineyard. When the Kaut reached a certain size, it was used as a temporary storage for the manure from the wineries. A total of 3 such facilities still existed in 1965.
The current structure "Mistkaut" is a closed courtyard, where the annual supply of the most important goods for the winemakers was stored and was already equipped with innovative technology back then.
Meanwhile, the members of the Nackenheim Local Heritage and Traffic Association have extensively repaired the surrounding wall and refurbished the present "Mistkaut". The "Table of Wine" invites hikers and cyclists to take a relaxed break with a wide view over the Rhine all the way to the Odenwald and Taunus.
The site can be rented through the local community of Nackenheim or the Local Heritage and Traffic Association at phone number 06135-5625.
