Castle Tour: The Ebernburg – Knights, Reformation, Romanticism
Participants will learn about the tumultuous history of the city's most famous castle during a tour around and about the Ebernburg on Sunday, February 22nd, at 11:00 AM.
Founded in the late Middle Ages, it gained fame through the knight and mercenary leader Franz von Sickingen, who also gathered reformist thinkers here in the struggle against the Roman Church – only to meet a bloody end.
The castle was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt. Its fate, as city guide Wolfgang Bartels will report, reflects the vicissitudes and military catastrophes of the city's history: from the Reformation, through the French occupation, to World War II.
In its current form, it dates back to the reconstruction in the 19th century as a tourist operation. It is owned by a foundation. The Ebernburg Association operates the family education center. Three state churches contribute to the funding. High costs arise from the structural maintenance of the entire complex. The tour includes the castle courtyard and also a visit to an exhibition dedicated to the history of Franz von Sickingen.
Participation fee 10 €, reduced for spa guests 8 €
Meeting point: Bridge at the entrance to the Ebernburg
