Hollaender was a composer for theater, cabaret, and film – he often wrote the lyrics himself as well. He was a cabaret director, author of several books (including the significant emigration novel "Human Ballast"), and a friend of many stars like Marlene Dietrich, for whom he wrote some of her best hits in Berlin and Hollywood.
As one of the few German emigrants, Hollaender achieved a career in Hollywood as a film composer, being nominated for the Oscar four times. However, he never really felt at home in America...
In 1956, he returned to Germany and experienced firsthand the rejection of the Germans towards repatriates. Thus, one can rightly say: Hollaender's life was as colorful and tragic as his chansons and hits.
The Frankfurt music cabaret artist and cabaret historian Jo van Nelsen will commemorate Hollaender on the occasion of his 130th birthday with shellac records directly from the Electrola suitcase gramophone and numerous excerpts from the books of Friedrich Hollaender, celebrating this unique creative mind of German entertainment culture.
