The Mainzer Rosenmontagszug is the highlight of Mainz Carnival and one of the largest carnival events in Germany. Each year, it transforms the city into a vibrant festival filled with music, humour and carnival spirit. On 16 February 2026, the traditional parade starts at 11:11 am in Mainz’s Neustadt district and makes its way through the city centre to the area around Mainz Cathedral.
Along a route of approximately 7 kilometres, visitors can enjoy a colourful spectacle lasting several hours. Around 10,000 active participants – including carnival associations, political floats, the famous “Schwellköpp”, marching bands, flag bearers and dance groups – create a lively and entertaining atmosphere. Around 600,000 spectators line the route to experience the parade and celebrate Mainz Carnival together.
The origins of the Mainzer Rosenmontagszug date back to 1838. Today, it stands alongside the parades in Cologne and Düsseldorf as one of the three most important Rose Monday parades in Germany. What makes Mainz special is the unique combination of humour, music and political satire. The parade is broadcast live on television and organised by the Mainzer Carneval-Verein (MCV). For visitors, it offers a unique opportunity to experience the full diversity and atmosphere of Mainz Carnival up close.
