For many centuries, the abundance of water has played an important role for Wackernheim. Numerous springs and productive wells shaped the place and everyday life.
A remarkable construction achievement from the 8th century, during the time of Charlemagne, was the Carolingian aqueduct. Originating in Heidesheim, the water was channeled through an underground canal that ran right through the village center of Wackernheim. This allowed the water to reach the imperial palace in Ingelheim.
Early on, a multitude of mills existed along the waterways, serving as important meeting places for the villagers.
With a hike, we will follow the path of the water; let yourself be surprised by stories about wells, springs, and mills.
