“Benjamin, I have nothing to wear!” or “Where are your hairs, August?”
During the heyday of popular music until the early 1930s, nearly everything that moved private and social life was thematized – in a way “from head to toe.” Fashion, of course, was part of this. In this context, both the complaint of having nothing to wear and the question about the vanished mane seem quite consistent.
But it was not just clothing that found its way into the songs of this time. Makeup, telephone calls, or the “rubber cavalier,” who made swimming an enjoyable pastime, were also musically processed. The corresponding sheet music appeared with elaborately designed graphic titles, the so-called title pages – a special delight for lovers of graphics. However, behind these sheets are not only stories but also biographies. A look into contemporary etiquette and manners books further shows how closely popular music was always in tune with the times.
Evelin Förster and Ferdinand von Seebach at the piano warmly invite you to a small chat within the exhibition “Benjamin, I have nothing to wear.” The evening will be accompanied by much music and visual material from the years 1918 to 1933.
