Dorn-Dürkheimer Hasensprung

Of prehistoric horses, saber-toothed tigers and hares

The hare gave its name to the single location. Moreover, the Middle High German word "spring/sprung", which has nothing to do with hopping, but means "spring". Hare, deer, fox, badger certainly roam the area between the three villages Dorn-Dürkheim, Wintersheim and Hillesheim. And yet there were once quite wondrous animals here: prehistoric horses, rhinoceroses or saber-toothed tigers. The found remains of 80 vertebrate species are about 8.5 million years old and thus belong to the age of the "Turolium". There is no more significant fossil site of this phase in all of Europe! A local artist donated to the community, among other things, a three-meter-high marble evolutionary column, which can be visited at any time. A wide variety of vines thrive on loess.

Evolutionssäule Dorn-Dürkheim mit Rastplatz

Evolutionsssäule Dorn-Dürkheim

Dorn-Dürkheim is known beyond regional borders due to the archaeological excavations north of the village, during which numerous finds from the Miocene were made in the 70s and 80s. These finds are now located in the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt am Main. In memory of the excavations, the "Evolution Column" was erected nearby in 2009, donated by the artist couple Ribbeck, who live in the village. Here, one can enjoy a small picnic with a beautiful view.

St. Joseph, Dorn-Dürkheim

St. Joseph Catholic Church, Dorn-Dürkheim

The present church, dedicated to St. Joseph, was built in 1891 and stands on the site of the Ursula Chapel, which was erected in 1745 and of which two sections of wall remain.

During the First World War, the bells were melted down, and three new ones were cast in 1934, but two bells had to be surrendered again during the Second World War.

In 1965, the church was extensively restored and given new windows. Particularly noteworthy is the rose window above the altar in the choir room, which depicts the Good Shepherd and scenes from the New Testament. It was created by the artist Heinz Hindorf, who also designed the well-known stained glass windows in the west choir of St. Catherine's Church in Oppenheim. The late Gothic pulpit from around 1500 is an art-historical gem of the church.

Ev. Kirche Dorn-Dürkheim

Protestant Church in Dorn-Dürkheim

The existence of the Protestant church in Dorn-Dürkheim can be reliably traced back to 1245, although the original building was probably constructed almost 400 years earlier. The current building dates mainly from 1618. The church building is a rectangular hall structure and some of the choir walls are still Gothic. Particularly impressive is the originally free-standing tower on the north side, which brings a piece of history to life with its embrasures – without any division into floors.
