Garrison Museum

Mainz

Garnisonsmuseum in der Zitadelle

The museum houses an impressive collection of uniforms, photographs, documents, and reserves associated with the garrison of Mainz. Visitors can also see a beautiful model of the former fortifications of Mainz. All exhibits are part of the private collection of Wolfgang Balzer who also acts as the curator. The "Museale Magazin der Festung und Garnison Mainz", to give it its full name, is open to all visitors by appointment (at the moment, the collection is changing locations and cannot be seen). Fischmarkt

Alzey

Fish Market and old Town Hall

Until the end of the 18th century fish was sold here, as well as other goods. The fishermen of the Altrhein had to offer it for sale but as numerous official warnings show they performed this duty dissatisfactorily and unwillingly.

Stellwerk

Armsheim

The old signal box Armsheim North

The Old Signal Box was built in 1899 at the intersection of the railway lines Alzey – Bingen and Alzey – Mainz. It was decommissioned in 2007. Today, train control is handled by electronic signal box technology. The Old Signal Box Armsheim Nord (An) is the only one of its kind (mechanical Stahmer signal box technology) in Rheinhessen, where all technical facilities of the block and lever systems, as well as the tensioning system, are completely preserved. Thus, visitors can closely experience how the work of a pointsman was until…

Fastnachtsbrunnen

Mainz

Schillerplatz

The Schillerplatz is one of the most significant squares in Mainz – centrally located and rich in history. Named after the poet Friedrich Schiller, it is now a vibrant place with a historic backdrop, framed by magnificent noble palaces such as the Osteiner Hof and the Erthaler Hof. Its appearance reflects the Baroque urban development, and it is also closely linked to Mainz Carnival: Every year on November 11th, the fifth season is ceremoniously opened here. The famous Carnival Fountain in the center of the square, with over 200 bronze…

Guided tour of the battlements

Ingelheim

Fortification of the Burgkirche

The all-around accessible main wall was mainly constructed in the 15th century. Its most vulnerable flank at the Mainzer Berg was strengthened by the addition of a Zwinger (inner defence gate). The only entrance (at Grabengasse/Kirchgasse) received an outer gate, a so-called “Barbarkane”. The second, southern breach was created in 1873 and provided access to the vineyards. The most salient point is the so-called Malakoff tower - formerly the “Alte Wache” (old guard post) with its dungeon. It offers an impressive…

Path of sighs

Ingelheim

Seufzerpfad/path of sighs

On the east flank of the Mainzer Berg the old defences are particularly massive and here are probably the best remaining parts of the wall, watchtowers and the low laying obstacle in the ditch. Here the Breitbach feeds the ditch. The romantic part along the so called Seufzerpfädchen (path of sighs) - it was the path where lovers used to meet - runs from Rinderbach (now Schillerplatz) to the traditional red-wine festival site and meets the outer courtyard at the Burgkirche – the starting point for every round-trip of the city…

Wasserhaus

Westhofen

Wasserhaus

Water House       Built in 1905 in the Art Nouveau style for the water supply of Westhofen. In the 1960s, the pressure was no longer sufficient, and it was decommissioned. History and Stories Prominently visible, the water house from 1905, built in the Art Nouveau style, reflects the self-understanding of that era. Wilhelm II aspired to great power, rearmed, annexed land overseas, and constructed. The buildings always represented the thoughts of their respective time and their rulers; so does our water house,…
