In March 2016, Paul O'Brien was a guest at KulturGUT for the first time and played a particularly moving concert in front of a sold-out house. Very close to the people, the Canadian enchanted our audience and the creators of KulturGUT with his gentle voice, great music, and very profound lyrics and stories. And of course, the likeable singer with a huge presence regularly returns to our small stage.
Immerse yourself in an evening full of musical storytelling and emotional depth – live with the charismatic Canadian singer/songwriter Paul O’Brien. Paul O’Brien was born in 1966 in Birmingham (England) as the son of Irish-Catholic parents and grew up in a musical family. At a young age, he began playing Celtic music in pubs and at festivals. In 2004, he emigrated with his family to British Columbia (Nova Scotia). After a phase as a history teacher, he fully dedicated himself to music again. He wrote his own songs and launched an international career. With more than 40 years of musical experience, he regularly tours across Europe, Canada, and the Middle East. For over a decade, he has been producing music with the German label Stockfisch Records. His music blends folk, Celtic sounds, country, and jazz. O’Brien sings about love, loss of home, migration experiences, social justice, and the beauty of his new home, Canada. His lyrics are personal, reflective, and often socially critical. A virtuoso on guitar, bodhrán, mandolin, and Irish tenor banjo – sometimes he incorporates hypnotic bodhrán playing into his concerts.
The AZ said about Paul’s performance: "Between his songs, he tells stories in great detail and entertainingly. You could listen for hours. He is not just a singer, songwriter, and guitarist, but also a gifted 'storyteller.' Listening to him is simply magical, whether he sings or speaks with his beautiful, unpretentious voice; a pull is created that one cannot escape."
