Mainz in November 1945: Three-year-old Karin Becker is playing in the courtyard. Her mother can see her through the kitchen window. But when she wants to bring the child inside for lunch, it has disappeared... Six years later, the Mainz commissioner Valentin Reitz is alerted to a newspaper article about a child abductor who was forcibly sterilized and mentally disabled by the Nazis. Suddenly, doubts arise within him... Did the police file the case too quickly back then? With care and determination, Reitz picks up the trail and soon follows it to Würzburg, Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Munich, and Armsheim. The novel, published in 2019, addresses one of the most spectacular cases of the post-war period, whose resolution caused a nationwide stir.
