Season opener of the Rhineland-Palatinate Garden Guides Association
On Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at 7:00 PM, the season opener of the Rhineland-Palatinate Garden Guides Association will take place at the Service Center for Rural Areas Rheinhessen-Nahe-Hunsrück, 55276 Oppenheim, Wormser Str. 111. We also feel the effects of climate change in our immediate surroundings and in our gardens: once extreme drought, then heavy rain, increasingly frequent periods of heat stress for both people and nature. All of this influences what we plant and how we can use our gardens. Endless watering with tap water is no longer up to date; instead, we must contribute to mitigating the negative impacts of climate change through the design and use of our gardens.
In the lecture, the following topics will be discussed:
1. Collecting and storing rainwater (rain barrels and cisterns)
2. Using rainwater (where, how, and how much is possible)
3. Infiltrating rainwater instead of directing it into the sewer system
4. What other measures can turn the garden into a “sponge”
Garden planner Elke Blänsdorf will show how your own garden contributes to the water cycle: with tips on rain barrels, cisterns, and the infiltration of rainwater into beautiful, effective infiltration basins. Current information will be available in a timely manner on the homepage: www.offene-gaerten-in-rheinhessen.de
