The 31-meter-high Bismarck Tower was built from 1907 to 1912 by the recently founded Rheinhessen Bismarck Association on the Westerberg. It was intended as a symbol of patriotic sentiment and as a counterpart to the Niederwald Monument erected in 1871 near Rüdesheim. The architect Wilhelm Kreis from Eltville designed a building type using elements of Art Nouveau and Neo-Romanesque that became significant for the construction of similar monuments in honor of Bismarck throughout the German Empire. Rough-hewn blocks of limestone from…

The town hall is two-storeyed, built of small field and quarry stones, which were quarried in the Gewann Steinkaut, called " Steinstück " in earlier centuries. The corners are made of house stones. The round tower attached to the building in the Renaissance style makes it possible to use the upper rooms of the town hall inside completely, as can be seen in many former noble houses in the 16th and 17th centuries. These rooms are reached via a beautiful stone spiral staircase in the staircase of the round tower. On the broad side of the…

Bad Münster am Stein - Ebernbu
Surrounded by shady trees, the Old Johanneskirche, the oldest preserved building in the district of Ebernburg and indeed the entire city, stands in the cemetery. The whitewashed church was built before the year 1200 and was first mentioned in writing in 1212. Its location between the hill of Ebernburg and the massive porphyry masses of the Rotenfels gives the place a particularly romantic aura. The church was part of the city wall, which is why it was called a fortified church. The marked feature is the pyramid-shaped roof of the square…

The village trench in Wörrstadt is a valuable heritage from the Middle Ages. First documented in the 13th century as “Zingele,” it is a worthy green lung in today’s urban area with its rich tree population. As a vegetated defensive structure, the trench enclosed the entire village area until the early 19th century. Until the 1980s, the trench was mostly planted with centuries-old elm trees, also called Effen. They all fell victim to the elm bark beetle and were replaced by other tree species. Since the spring of 2015,…

Through the door behind the altar of the impressive cross-shaped hall from 1775, one enters the medieval tower, which once formed the chancel of the predecessor building. From there, a modern staircase leads up to the pulpit through the former east window. On the walls, as well as particularly in the deep window recesses of the three tower windows, high-quality wall paintings from around 1420 have been preserved. They depict, among other things, scenes from the Passion and Resurrection of Christ, including Christ on the Mount of Olives, the…

The town of Ludwigshöhe and its church are relatively young. The original town of Rudelsheim was located in the Rhine floodplains and was largely abandoned after a flood disaster in 1819. The last residents moved their houses to a higher location in 1830, and the original Rudelsheim church was destroyed by fire in 1832. In 1848, the new St. Vitus Church was built in the new village of Ludwigshöhe, towering above the village.

The Stadecker Warte is a historical agricultural building in the vineyards above Stadecken-Elsheim. It was built in 1930 by the winemakers of the region at the edge of the vineyard Stadecker Spitzberg and originally served as a preparation site for pest control. In the 1980s, the Warte was raised and fitted with a tower. Until the end of the 1990s, it was an observation post from which shooting devices could be triggered by radio to drive away the starling flocks from the vineyards. Today, the Stadecker Warte is a scenically attractive…
