The former Augustinian Canons' Monastery, today the Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, is located in the centre of Pfaffen-Schwabenheim. The impressive buildings from the 12th to 18th centuries are among the most important cultural monuments between the Rhine and Nahe rivers. You will find Romanesque, early Gothic and Baroque building elements. The baroque high altar from 1714 and the baroque Heilmann organ from 1775 are particularly worth seeing. The adjoining monastery is now privately owned. On the 1st weekend in August,…

The so-called "Mistkaut" between Nierstein and Nackenheim in the middle of the vineyards on the "Roten Hang", is located directly on the "RheinTerrassenWeg" and the "Butttenmännie-Wanderweg". The relic of earlier times from agriculture and viticulture was once used as a temporary storage for manure. Today, wine tastings and festivals are held there. It takes its name from a rock niche (Kaut) in the Rotliegende. This was created by mining rock gravel (Kummer), which was used as fertiliser. Because of its high potash content, the…

The Flute Player Fountain was inaugurated on 5 May 1990 with a village festival attended by a large number of people. It is a bronze sculpture by Grustav Nonnenmacher, an outstanding formative artist from Worms who has created numerous works. Nonnenmacher integrated one of the old sandstone troughs donated by Kurt Bernhard into the fountain. The flute player symbolises the cheerfulness of the people of Rheinhessen who live here. A boy as a musician, warbling into the air, legs crossed, content with himself and the world. The fountain was…

The Catholic parish church of St. Walburga was built in 1740. The Baroque hall church with a choir enclosed on three sides was formerly used as a simultaneous church. On the gallery of the parish church, you will discover a real treasure: the single-manual, eleven-stop organ built in 1763 by Joseph Anton Onimus. It is the only surviving organ by the famous organ builder and was lovingly renovated in 1993 by the company Förster und Niclaus.

Bingen on the riverbank, near the marina, looking towards the Binger Loch Standing on the river bank in the late afternoon of 25th August 1817, Turner looks back towards the Binger Loch. In the foreground the painting shows a typical boat of that time. On the right bank we see the town of Rüdesheim, its buildings reflected in the river. On the left bank we can just make out Bingen, watched over by Burg Klopp. Burg Ehrenfels is only hinted at. In the far distance we can vaguely perceive the Mäuseturm, which was originally built on…

Only a part of the entrance of the former Lutheran church building is still visible. The sandstone plaque above refers to the year of construction 1753. After both the Catholic and Reformed congregations had their own new houses of worship, the six resident Lutheran families joined forces with fellow believers from the Kurmainz Rheingau across the Rhine. With the help of a collection, a modest small church was built and used jointly. As the only church in Frei-Weinheim, it did not have a bell. The Lutherans were assigned to Ober-Ingelheim.…
