Niersteiner Pettenthal

Boy's name? Toad migration? Rieslings of world fame!

A vineyard of world fame! As the name "Thal" (old German word for valley) suggests, this single vineyard site begins in the valley, directly by the river Rhein, and then climbs steeply up the "Roter Hang". This single vineyard site is the steepest section on "Roter Hang" - very valuable and extremely sought after by winegrowers. The cadastral name has existed since 1753. Where does the name come from? There are several interpretations. The most common variant would be the boy or family name Peter. It could also be derived from Pater, meaning monk. The vineyards were owned by the church for a long time. Or - as they say in Nierstein: "Petten" refers to toads that migrate to the springs and sump holes that emerge above. An indication of this is that an adjacent area is called "Stumpe Loch", which is probably derived from Sumpfloch. Whether ordinary boy's name or ordinary toad: the Rieslings, on the other hand, are not ordinary at all. They are mineral, expressive and capable of ageing. They grow on bare red clay sandstone and get plenty of sun all day long.

Roter Hang Blick Richtung Nierstein

Roter Hang

The red hillside is a wine growing area with special optics between Nierstein and Nackenheim. The former formation emerged over 280 million years ago because of a collapse of the rhine ditch between the basin of Mainz and the upper rhine ditch. Another special feature is the red ground which was also determining for the name. The colouring happened because of embedded iron compounds which emerged under the subtropic climate of another era. The substance of the ground is consists of clay and sandstone and in combination with the climate today the red hillside gives its grapes an extraordinary taste. Moreover the red stone is the youngest deposit of the Rotliegend period in the Saar- Nahe basin which is still preserved until today. The area is divided into seven individual layers: Orbel, Heiligenbaum, Ölberg, Hipping, Brudersberg, Pettenthal and Rothenberg. Mainly Riesling with really good quality is grown here. Furthermore diverse events are taking place at the red hillside because of its special qualities.

Aussichtspunkt Brudersberg "Schönste Weinsicht"

In 2012, the view from the Brudersberg in Nierstein was voted "Most Beautiful Wine View 2012" in Rheinhessen. In 2012, for the first time, the German Wine Institute (DWI) and the regional wine promotions awarded a "Most Beautiful Wine View 2012" in each of the 13 German wine-growing regions. These are vantage points that offer particularly spectacular views of the wine landscapes. From the Brudersberg, in good weather, you have an optimal distant view into the Hessian Ried all the way to Frankfurt (view direction east), further to the Taunus with the Großer Feldberg (view direction northeast) and in view direction southeast to the Rhine bend near Oppenheim to the Odenwald with the Melibokus. The Brudersberg itself is a popular port of call for hikers, cyclists and the countless guests who get to know Nierstein on a vineyard tour. The RheinTerrassenWeg between Worms and Mainz passes by here. In the midst of the vineyards "Oelberg", "Kranzberg", "Pettenthal", "Hipping" and "Spiegelberg", the "Brudersberg" is the prime piece on Nierstein's Red Slope. Its Rieslings are among the best in the world.

RheinTerrassenWeg-stage Oppenheim - Nierstein - Nackenheim - Bodenheim

In Oppenheim, Katharinenkirche, Kellerlabyrinth and the ruin Landskrone provide a great start, before extended vineyards offer wonderful views. The Niersteiner marketplace is one of the most beautiful places in Rheinhessen with its ambience and is ideal for a break, before the climb to the Red Hang demands a bit of fitness. Rheinhessen's "most beautiful wine view on the Brudersberg" is worth the effort. Great views accompany the hiker to Nackenheim, with a beautiful view of the church of St. Gereon. The last part to Bodenheim is quickly mastered. The wine village is the Mecca for Strausswirtschaften and Gutsschänken in Rheinhessen.

Rhine Cycle Route / Rheinhessen

With two daily stages, Rheinhessen is part of the 1,230-kilometer long-distance European cycle path. From Worms via Mainz to Bingen, these connect the regions of Palatinate and the Romantic Rhine. A pure river experience on over 90 kilometers of boating, alumni areas and last but not least the famous vineyards and vineyards of the Rheinterrasse make this the fascination. In Bingen, the Nahe Cycle Path connects.

Amiche Cycle Route

A simple round-trip on a former railway line, from the Rhine to the hills of Rhenish Hesse. In the 19th century, when railways were becoming more established, there were also tracks linking Bodenheim and Alzey, and, on a different stretch, Nierstein and Köngernheim. It wasn’t long before the locals had given the railways the nicknames ‘Amiche’ and ‘Valentinche’.These tracks have been long since demolished and a pleasant cycle route, which also goes by the nickname ‘Amiche’, runs in their place. From your starting point at the Bodenheim railway station, the route initially takes you along the Rheinstraße through the older part of town and across the old ‘Mommenheimer Weg’ path over a hill to Harxheim. From here, the first stretch of the former railway runs through flat landscape along the low-level railway embankment for a total of 6.1 km.The incline on the way to Selzen is noticeable but manageable and, as you climb, you will be rewarded with a view of the eastern edge of Mommenheim. The route continues to follow the former railway line as it proceeds through Selzen but it has to make use of the (equally comfortable) cycle paths and farm tracks from there onwards, as the railway line is no longer passable between Hahnheim, Köngernheim and Friesenheim. From Friesenheim onwards, you are back on the railway line for a second time, this time for 7.5 km. This path takes you via Dexheim to the outskirts of Nierstein. To make your way back to your starting point in Bodenheim, which is 12 km away at this point, cross through the old centre of Nierstein and, from there, take the Rhine Cycle Route and then the Rhine Terrace Route.
