The German wines are divided into 3 quality levels (wine groups): German table wine, quality wine bA, Prädikatswein. In which group a wine is to be classified depends on must weight, ripeness and type of grape harvest. In the case of quality wine (with or without predicate), it is assigned by the testing center. The quality level is indicated on the label.

Such a wine must come from suitable vine varieties included in a list. The grapes must be harvested exclusively in Rheinhessen (no area waste). The wine must be typical in appearance, smell and taste free of defects and for the specified origin and grape variety.

Quality wine testing

The principle »quality in the glass« determines German wine law. Therefore, a wine may only be designated and marketed as a quality wine or predicate wine if it has been granted, on application, an Official Exam Number (and possibly a predicate). The examining authority (for Rheinhessen this is the Alzey testing center at the local viticulture office) makes the final decision on the basis of the analytical examination findings of an approved laboratory to be submitted with the application and the sensory evaluation of the wine by the...
